upgrade to 12.04, no open office and desktop confusing

Asked by Rosencrantz Cardwell

The last time I upgraded to 12.04 from version 10.04, my desktop became confusing (I could not find any applications), My open office software went away and was replaced with Libre office, which I don't want. My email client, Evolution, stopped working.

This is called an "Upgrade"? What did I do wrong?

Sincerely,

Rosencrantz.

You can uninstall libreoffice and install openoffice via debs if you want. The development of libreoffice is a lot more active.

Can you expand on 'stopped working', it tells us nothing

Thanks

These two sites offer much information on Ubuntu 12.04 There is a lot changed, but try it, you may like it. I do.

Check the manual as given in links in post 2.

If you really don't like the new desktop interface Unity then you can go back to the old Gnome Classic Desktop

In a terminal (CTRL+ALT+T) enter

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Reboot. Just above the box for your password and to the right of your name there is a small circular icon click on that and select "Gnome Classic" this is much more like the old 10.04.

The documentation solved my problem for the most part.

I will probably go back to the original gnome; the e-mail though, I am not sure of.

I don't think I will upgrade for a while, version 12 has some ways to go.

Thank you very much though.
