Ubuntu 12.04 update problem

Asked by Mo Graahy

I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 11.04 to Ubuntu 12.04 (on its own dedicated partition), and the update appears to have completed successfully - BUT, apart from the login screen which displays correctly, once logged in all I can see is the desktop wallpaper and the pre-existing icons on the desktop.

There are no screen controls, or unity icons, or launcher icons visible at all, and there is nothing I can do to control the system.

In order to get into my Windows OS I have to turn off the power to the laptop and then do a cold start.

What can I do to recover a working Ubuntu 12.04 WITHOUT doing a total install (I don't want to loose important files and settings which should have been migrated during the upgrade)

Thanks in anticipation

Mo

You should have a BACKUP of your data (to removable media or another system) if your data is important to you. So data loss isn't an issue. No back means the data is disposable and of zero value to you.

Can you help with this problem?
