cannot change gui in 12.0.4

Asked by Carol Painting

I have read answers to similar problems and they don't work for me. I wish to access a normal gui, where I have access to menus. I have tried installing kde4 and I've tried installing the gnome panel (the latter as recommended by Warren Hill in an answer to #207611). Neither of these work because I don't get an option to select a desktop. I've tried disabling the auto login but there are no options on the screen that asks for my password.

I went back to 10.04 LTS, added kde4 and with that I do get an option to select the gui, so what have I missed with 12.04?

Disabling auto login will present a login screen (next time you reboot). In that screen first select the user (your user name...). Before entering the password (depending on the installation) somewhere will be a drop down box (maybe with "UBUNTU" option selected) where you can select Gnome classic (recomended if not experienced user).

Assuming you get to the log on screen OK then you can select the desktop.

Just to the right hand side if the box that takes your password there is a circular icon. It's not obvious that this opens a drop down list until you click it. When you do you will see a list of all the desktops installed. The one I suggested is "Ubuntu Classic".

Select this and enter your password. Should just work

Thanks - that works; Warren explained where to find the menu.
