Logout of one desktop and into a different one

Asked by Bruce MacAlister

Based on the answer to my Question #206278 I used Ubunutu 12.04 Software Center to download and installed "Xubuntu desktop system". It seemed to intall correctly with all dependencies satisfied and I find XFE files.

What I cannot figure out is how to log out of Unity and log in to XFE. That option (like the dual boot I'm familiar with) is not offered. Log out simply takes me to a log in screen with no options for which desktop to load. Clearly something didn't get downloaded or some option did not get set but it's not clear what that is.

As for how to explain this so I understand it I'm new to Ubuntu but I have decades of Windows experience and some old Unix, OS/2, and mainframe JCL experience. In short, I know and am comfortable Windows cmd but not the ins and outs of Linux terminal commands.

Hi ,
if you are using Ubuntu 12.04 , then logout and on login box up right you will see a symbol like gear. Click it and a dropdown menu will open to select your environment.
Take a look in this video here --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_OgNqHamqes
Thanks

Slick! That was it and it was simple. Who would have suspected that little icon on the top right of the LOGIN WINDOW would yeild the multi-boot choice. I expected an explicit list (like dual boot) or an arrow for a pull-down. So much for expectations.

I did not see this anywhere in the Ubuntu documentation nor could I find it with searches with several wording attempts so it is indeed a well hidden secret.

Thank you for the solution and I hope others can find your simple but enlightening answer.
