Need project folders or launchers with file and app links-shortcuts

Asked by Bruce MacAlister

To move from Windows I need project-oriented "launchers" that I can dock on the desktop when I am working on the project and close when I move to another project.

In Windows XP you create a folder-directory and put in shortcuts to apps, folders, and files.

I cannot find a comparable function in Ubuntu 12 with Unity.

Otherwise I like what I see in Unity with about 2 weeks experience.

With many mouse clicks of the Launcher-Dash it is very slow and a little confusing to use for a project.

Unless someone has a better approach to efficiently handling of project-specific work, Ubuntu with Unity cannot be my primary system.

Then don't use Unity. You don't have to use Unity if you don't like it.....

You can make a custom launcher with a quicklist for the apps you want to run, or you can simply lock the apps you develop in to the launcher. Both are fine

Thanks for the response. So I need to figure out how to use Ubuntu 12 without the Launcher. I'll start looking on the Ubuntu sites for info on how to do that. If you have one to suggest, send it.

sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

Log off and log in to the XFCE session.
