Window buttons, window title bar and window borders dissapeared

Asked by Mirek Buczma

Help request:

Just now I have noticed that on most windows the borders, title bar and thus window control buttons (maximize, minimize and close) are missing - to close a window I have to highlight icon in side panel and choose "close", some windows cannot be moved as there is no bar to "grab" them.

Highly annoying.

Can anyone provide a solution, please?

For Ubuntu Unity.
There is a so called indicator-appmenu, the applications menu is hidden in global panel unless mouse hovers upon, same with buttons at the corner left hand side.
Some applications may start in full screen mode, try F11-key to reset to normal size.
Applications can be moved with Alt-key+left mouse or when maximised grab the top panel with left mouse an detach from global menu.

Reset options for Unity.

Thank you for the tutorial.

However the problem is a little bigger - the window title bar and window borders dissapear - I cannot move most windows (I cannot grab the top panel because it does not exist) I cannot change the size of the windows, I cannot minimize them in a simple way. Each operation I have to by hovering the mouse over the indicator-appmenu but even then the CLOSE button often does not appear so I have to choose FILE > CLOSE.

It is very annoying and certainly it is a bug of some sort, resetting unity restores to normal but only for a short time. It is very hard to reset unity every half hour or so...

Regards

To exclude user misconfiguration test if the guest session has the same behaviour.
If a unity reset doesn't last then search bug reports by click on 'Bugs' on top of this page, in case confirm or report a new one.
Since compiz is the window manager maybe research also compiz bug reports.

Same issue:
Acer 4810T, Ubuntu 12.04, xfce desktop, update 23 July:
Just downloaded the latest update (23 July). All window control buttons now missing, and applications cannot be dragged around the screen . xfce drop-down control panel is non-functional where covered by an application window. Lastly, Workspaces does not work properly, showing only one workspace though 4 are requested. A reboot does not solve the problem, nor does compiz --replace. That just locks up, need Cntl-C to quit it.

Follow on from above:
I have also notiiced that the drop-down menus on items like File, Edit, etc do not work as planned. The drop down window opens when I click on File, but I cannot get my cursor on any of the menu items below. As soon as my cursor leaves the File area, by example, that File window closes. Alt- and Cntl- buttons work however (e.g. Cntl-q to quit the app)

Can you help with this problem?
