Optional Unity launcher

Asked by Jesse Wayde Brandao

There are a lot of users that uses docks other than the unity launcher on the left, such as docky, plank, AWN, Cairo-dock, etc... however unity dash, the shortcuts and the panel are really good and something that would want to be kept. Like Unity 2d, it would be nice if there could be an option to remove the unity launcher without disrupting the rest of the unity experience.

The other option would be if we could have more control over the behaviour and position of the launcher. This option needen't be added to the appearence tab for casual users, but for more advanced users, these could be located in the Compiz configuration settings manager.

In short, is it possible that in the future the option to have unity without the launcher could be added?

Why not install Xubuntu and you won't have Unity installed. you can then install the dock of your choice...

That doesn't really answer the question. The point is Xubuntu does not provide everything that Unity does. Unity has more components than just the launcher. The shortcuts overview, the dash with it's lenses, it's application switcher, the globalmenu... These are some of the features which are part of unity that I wouldn't want to lose.
