missing window control buttons, Workspace issue

Asked by Chester Rouse

I use Ubuntu 12.04 and after downloading and applying changed software yesterday (Thursday 5/24/12) all window control buttons vanished. Also, I am unable to change the size of a window with cursor controls.

Acer 4810T, Ubuntu 12.04, xfce desktop, update 23 July:
Just downloaded the latest update (23 July). All window control buttons now missing, and applications cannot be dragged around the screen . xfce drop-down control panel is non-functional where covered by an application window.
Lastly, Workspaces does not work properly, showing only one workspace though 4 are requested. A reboot does not solve the problem, nor does compiz --replace.

Please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Enter:
compiz --replace

Alternatively a reboot may help.
sudo reboot

Exactly my problem with Compiz on Maya MATE and Maya XFCE. Compiz is a good program and feature, but it cripples its usefulness by denying you button bars and messing with panel toolbar. If XFCE performed opacity for active windows you're working on I'd regrettably pass on Compiz. I'd be happy to help beta-test Compiz for a solution if I knew where!
