Ubuntu

Desktop Icons Disappear In 12.04 LTS

Asked by Mark Bruffey on 2012-05-22

After the screen goes to sleep, the desktop icons are gone when the screen wakes up.

(I also experience the same effect when I execute any program that requires Wine.)

Also, the second monitor is completely lost at the same time.

The icon bar on the left still flies in and out and works just fine under these conditions.

If I sweep the mouse into the upper left corner of the screen, the desktop icons all appear for a split second--but then they are gone in a flash!
A log out and log in restores proper functionality.
The computer is a Dell Precision M70.
The setup is dual external monitors (via Dell port replicator), using the default NVidia drivers installed by 12.04 LTS.
The default drivers work better than any of the proprietary options; that's why I am using them.
I'm using Gnome.

If youo press ALT+F2 and ruun:

nautilus -q

Do they come back?

No, they do not come back when I press ALT+F2 and run "nautilus -q."

I am also getting quite a few "DVI No Time Information" messages on screen. Sometimes the icons are lost in conjunction with the appearance of that message. They also sometimes disappear when a shell script runs. Mark

I am having this problem. The desktop icons disappear randomly. I've been toggling Advanced Settings >> "Desktop" >> "Have file manager handle the desktop" off then on again. The icons come back, but they often disappear again.

Yes, I can confirm this error.

These desktop symbols only doesn't disappear if I nautilus is opened but only if nautilus window is in the same desktop where it was opened.

If you have opened one winow and move it to another desktop nautilus will crash and desktop symbols disappear again.

I can confirm this bug, but it manifests only when I disconnect the other monitor.
What I can see is that after unplugging the external monitor the desktop background stretches and the icons disappear. I use Gnome 3 not Unity and when I got to upper left corner for a second it shrinks the desktop to right size display the icons and then it returns to usual with streched background and disappearing icons.
When I plug the monitor back in the problem remains. I have to log out and back in to get the icons back.
I use ASUS N53S laptop with nVidia optimus with nvidia-bumblebee combo.

Same problem here, I have an HP 6530b with intel integrated graphic card, with Ubuntu 12.04 and Gnome 3.
