ubuntu Precise boots to screensaver only, 2nd shot

Asked by greg heil

Whenever i restart Ubuntu, now, i get a plain screen: no taskbars, no icons etc. Nothing to mouse to. Also PP does not respond to any KB command i have tried.

Totally mute.

i believe this happened after i installed fvwm2.. (also some other things)

Before this on the last working session there was a hard crash which brought up (and froze) a dialog to report the issue which said something about bin/compiz ...

Log off and log into Unity2D session

i think i would have had to install Unit2D..? In any case as the GUI is mute i would have to access a terminal BEFORE i entered Ubuntu`s unity. Should i perform the apt-get stuff from there? How to boot into terminal mode?

You can press CTRL+ALT+F1 and do stuff there, could even make a new user and log in as that to see if it is different

And i thought the GUI was mute! AC1-6 appear to go to terminals 1 to 6 and CA7 gets back to the Unity GUI.

i did try the newusers cmd but it could not get a lock on /etc/passwd

i did do the apt-get stuff at https: // wiki.ubuntu.com/Unity2D

But unity-2d fails (command not found) and unity fails (seg fault)

Note i do not have the GUI passworded so it goes straight into it w/o giving me any options such as picking my interface...

i guess i did not wait long enough. Eventually it brought up an Err dialog:

"The application Compiz has closed unexpectedly."

On completing this it then opens:
"Collecting problem information"

in the terminal (CA1) i did

sudo apt-get check

Which said "done" which i assume means it could find no dependency problems.

then i did

sudo apt-get changelog compiz

which gave 20+ pages of reports...

At this point the only alternative seems to completely rebuild the OS without knowing what to avoid in the future ... but i would hope that Ubuntu Precise is not that fragile? Perhaps there is something to be done at the terminal?

i did

sudo apt-get -f upgrade

twice, the second time was only 6 lines.

Restarting is still the same: a brief showing of the Unity widget, then its removal to the mute screensaver.

My recommendation: burn a 12.04 DVD and boot from that. Take the 'Try Ubuntu' and try everything to ensure that there is no problem running 12.04. It is far more demanding on hardware than previous versions. You asked about 2D. You don't have to install anything. On the login screen, at the right of the password dialogue box is an Ubuntu symbol. Click this, and you are offered 2D as an option.

Thanks, to reiterate i no NOT have a login screen. There is automatic, non passworded login. Is there some way of forcing that screen so i can follow your hints?

Thanks! Using

i was able to get a login screen. Now i just have to figure out fvwm, presumably there is a way to access apps etc from there.
