step one-if you dont have back ups of your important files now is the time to make some-you will need them eventually(hopefully not too soon.)

Please describe in further detail how you installed ubuntu (wubi or is it partitioned with xp or vm or what).
3-to remove ubuntu(crude way).
BEFORE DOING ANYTHINg you need a repair disk for windows and your backups for data/programs.
1-log in to windows and right click on my computer---> manage---> storage---> disk management-delete linux partition.
not grub wont find ubuntu.

2. slot in repair cd that you made(make sure it works before you do above step), and go to command prompt (under tools?).

here are the commands
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
these 2 commands bring back windows loader

now ubuntu and grub should be gone--do a clean install of ubuntu-if you upgraded 3 versions in a row there could be a lot of broken packages that dont work anymore which are causing you all these problems

hope this helped
