Blank desktop with No Keyboard Functionality on Boot-up

Asked by ODEON

Tried upgrading to 12.04 from 11.10...

Using an HP Pavilion Elite m9402f running an AMD64 (Phenom X4) processor.

After the installation the machine boots but would hang, requiring hard reboot but still nothing. Mouse is visible and moves around fine but otherwise the desktop screen shows up blank with no ability to do anything not even to go to the terminal (unless there's another way to get there which I don't know about)...

Worked fine with 11.10. Stopped working with 12.04

Totally appreciate any help on this as I'm dead in the water here, guys! Thanks in advance...

What GPU do you have?

You might get into a terminal by doing CTRL+ALT+t or failing that you can get a full screen terminal by doing CTRL+ALT+F1 - but if you have no keyboard funcionality that isn't going to be easy.

I think at the end of the day, your best option might be to get the live-CD and boot from that then do a clean install if the live-CD runs OK. Set to the option to use a login password. You can always take that off later. If you need to rescue any data, you should be able to get to it by running the live-CD.

@ actionparsnip:

This is what I found off the internet regarding specs (as I'm not home next to it)...I never changed any HW so it should be the same:

128MB (shared) Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE integrated graphics chip

I have an idea that there is a known issue with that chipset. If so, you might want to consider re-installing 11.10 and living with it until the problem gets fixed. First thing I would try would be getting the 12.04 live-CD and seeing if 12.04 will run from the live-CD. If it runs from there, a clean install might stand a chance, but you might have to login in Unity 2D mode so don't set the option to no password on login.

OK, managed to create a bootable USB with 12.04 on it....

I was able to run 12.04 perfectly from the USB (keyboard working fine, able to see the entire desktop as if normal). Here's the problem...How do I reinstall 12.04 on the existing hard disk without losing my existing stuff (ie. documents, files, photos etc.)...Basically, boot up normally like it used....

When I first boot from the USB, I get the following options:
-Run Ubuntu from this USB
-Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk
-Test Memory
-Boot from first hard disk
-Advanced option
-Help

I choose the 2nd option and get to a fully functional desktop which asks me to install 12.04 with the following options:

1 -Install Ubuntu 12.04 LTS alongside Ubuntu 12.04 LTS....This option looks like it will keep all my stuff but each time I will have to choose which operating system I want to use.

2 - Erase Ubutnu 12.04 LTS and reinstall....Definitely don't want this!

3 - Something else...Totally apprehensive on playing around with this option...

Not sure which one of these are the best....Any ideas would be greatful, guys!
