Really easy. Click on the big Ubuntu button at the top of the launcher or press the key that would once have been called the 'Windows' key in byegone days. This opens the Dash (or lens). There is a searchbar at the top. Try typing terminal or command into it. Before you have typed three letter, a terminal icon will have appeared. It is that easy to get absolutely anything you want. The other thing you can do when you want an app and all else fails is to click the applications icon near the bottom of the Dash lens. This is the icon that looks a bit like a ruler and two candles. That brings up the applications lens an you can click the 'filter results'. Prepare to be amazed - you might just recognise what you are seeing.

Press CTRL+ALT+T

Terminal will run, if you use terminal alot I suggest you install guake and you can show and hide a terminal with a shortcut key. The commands will continue to execute while the terminal is hidden and it will always be on TOP of the other windows so you don't have to search the open windows for your terminal.

I have plugged in a mass storage USB device, and Ubuntu 12.03. 1 LTS does not recognize it. I entered the terminal command lsusb and got no matches, and the same with dmesg.

Second post: I have plugged in a mass storage USB device, and Ubuntu 12.03. 1 LTS does not recognize it. I entered the terminal command lsusb and got no matches, and the same with dmesg.
Am I entering the wrong commands? I've gone to "details", and mass storage devices are not listed. Help, please, thanks.

Please make a new question for your new issue. This question is asking how to open a terminal, which has been answered.

ctrl+alt+T works, but the terminal background has the same colour than the characters. Create first a perfil with diferent character and background colours (you must choose a name for the perfil). Then on files, choose your perfil

You can change the profile of the terminal to have different opacity, colour and font. If you use the terminal a lot I suggest you use guake. It shows and hides on hotkey (F12 by default). The commands will continue to run while the terminal is hidden and it supports tabs :-)

If you use the Terminal a lot, you can also access it from the Dash at the top of the side bar and then drag it to the desktop and/or on the sidebar where it will be always quickly accessible.

Can you help with this problem?
