Difficulty finding way round Ubuntu 12.04LTS

Asked by allistair

I'm a real novice. I have just upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04LTS to 12.04LTS.

There are a lot of Icons down the side of thge desktop and I can find "Systems", but I can't find "Applications" or "Places", that were on 10.04. Where are they ?

I presume the icons are on what what is called the "Launcher" . When you ulock from Launcher, how do you get what you've inlocked, back again ?

Is " Libre" a new name for "Open Office", or is it a competitor ?

Is "Evolutiuon" a competitor for Mozilla ?

Cheers and thanks for any help. Allistair

Libreoffice is a fork of openoffice based on the same code.
Mozilla is a development team whereas Evolution is a software. If you mean THUNDERBIRD then its just a different default mail client which can be removed and Evolution installed.

The abilities of the old menu style are in dash or the cog menu in the top right corner. OmgUbuntu site has a how to so you can switch back to the old style if you desire.

Just rerun the app so it appears in the Unity bar and click "Lock to launcher", or you can drag the icon to the launcher from dash.

Either is fine

Thank you for your reply. I am a real novice. How do I rerun the app
so it appears in the Unity bar ? ( is the Unity bar the one down the
left side of the page with the icons in ? ).

I clicked on the dash home icon, but the icon that disappeared when I
unlocked from launcher is not there.

To run an application that isn't in the launcher (which is the 'proper' name of the Unity bar):

Click on that big button with the Ubuntu logo on it at the top of the launcher.
An overlay will appear on the screen (this is called the Dash). It has a text entry field, for you to start typing the name of the app.
The icon for the app should appear in the dash. You can click on it or if it is the first icon then pressing Enter opens it.

The icon for the app will then appear in the launcher and if you right click on the icon and select "Lock to Launcher", it will stay there even when the application is closed, for easier access in the future. You could unlock it from the launcher if you no longer want it there by right-clicking on it and selecting "Unlock from Launcher".
