I experienced a failure of my 11.10 showing the launch icons and the upper system bar? Any ideas how to get them back?

My only timely answer was to upgrade from 11.04 which was on my drive to 11.10. It was a great deal of trouble and time and I did loose email information and some of my files, but the problem is solved.

I tried to reload from my backups, but that was not successful due to the amount of storage memory I had available.

I am backing everything up again at this time.

This is all a learning curve to me... but doing better.
