Ubuntu 11.10 build - icons not showing up

1. In System settings, some of the icons do not show up
2. On left side bar, icons not showing up
Is there a refresh for the icons? They were all there prior to the 365 updates when we installed Unbuntu 11.10.
3. Lexmark X1240 will not print, although computer recognizes the printer and gave us the generic driver for the 1200 series.

I am a nb and I don't know what you are talking about. I will need some detailed instructions please.

Also, I am unable to see the shut off button, although I can move my mouse to the name in upper right corner and then over slightly and get the drop down menu and shut it down. Any help on that would be good too.

Since I am helping out a friend, Peggy, with this problem, I won't be back online until Monday. Sorry for the long delay in getting back to this message, but thank you very much for responding so promptly.

Log off, then click the cog, select the Unity2D session, then log in
