Is it possible to change the desktop on 11.10?

Asked by bolobill

Is it possible to change the desktop on 11.10 so that it looks and runs like previous versions? This sidebar that pulls out is not only annoying, but it requires me to open endless windows of some things (my expansion drive, for instance) in order to return to them.

It wold be nice to have all of the things in one place, and not have to put my cursor over something in order to go to options. This looks as though it is trying to be like Windows 7.

Well, I downloaded it, but when I get to the login screen, it offers me no options. Where is this hidden in my system?

Yes, just run:

sudo apt-get install xfce4

log off then in the login screen, click the cog and select xfce session, then log in.

Andrew,

I hate to say this, but I have never altered linux before. Can you tell me how to run sudo apt-get install xfce4 ?

Or, failing that, how can I make 11.10 look like your desktop?

Thank you.

There is more than Gnome as a desktop. Infuture if you want that be default, install Xubuntu ;)

Linux is incredibly flexible. In Windows if you don't like the desktop you are pretty much stuck short of 3rd party desktops...
