11.10 like Windows 7?

Asked by bolobill

Is there a way for me to revert to the previous version of Ubuntu? This is just like Windows 7, and, quite frankly, with all of the worst features.

I can no longer see all of my open items at the bottom of the screen, and have to engage multiple steps to find things that are open.

Is it possible to make 11.10 more functional, or do I need to go back to the previous version?

Thank you.

If you install XFCE, you will find it is a LOT like the old gnome2 UI. In Linux you DON'T have to use the default ANYTHING. The OS is extremely changable so if you don't like Unity you don't have to use it. Youo'd be suprised the number of people whom are ignorant of one if the founding principles of the OS they are using.

If you run:

sudo apt-get instal xfce4

Then log off, then in the login screen click the cog icon and select the xfce session., then log in. There are more desktops than Gnome. For the record, this is my '11.10 desktop':

Oneiric is not Gnome or even Unity. It is just the default UI in the Gnome based release. There are LOTS of alternate desktops. I use LXDE but the is KDE, XFCE and Enlightenment to name just a few.

Can you help with this problem?
