Customisation of Unity

Asked by Chris Jackson

I know this is going to be a "we don't care" answer. The question i have is there likely to be code to allow the Gnome 2.6 style customisation features? (hide top panel mainly) I am currently using the Unity ShellRotated compiz plugin, however this is honestly one of a handful of customisations that are available, since 11.04 there has been next to no customisation available, I realise this isn't a show stopper, as I still use Unity.

You can install compizconfig-settings-manager and tweak some things. A word of warning though, it's possible to break Unity by setting some things, so caution is advised, as well as a recovery plan such as knowing how to reset Unity, the panel, and the launcher if you have to (and maybe a backup of the compiz settings as well).

I'm sure all the configurable options will come back to the Ubuntu desktop with time. It's not that they don't care, I think the developers just have their hands full with putting out a stable LTS system at the moment.
