11.10 desktop menu not displayed

Asked by Michael Lamberg

Running Ubuntu 11.10 desktop on a intel 486 machine... seems to be working fine, I have the launcher on the left side, and on the top right, the normal menu icons for mail, network, user, and system settings/shutdown.. What I "don't" have on the top left of the menu bar is the word "Desktop" and if you hover there the menu items for it (File, edit, view,go, bookmarks, help). How do I get it back? I know it's suppose to be there because I have it running cleanly on another machine. BTW, if I open any applications its respective menu does show up in the top left menu bar..... thanks for your help,

Mike

version 11.04 and 11.10 use a different user interface called unity. it does not have "desktop" and such running across the top.

if you want the old interface, you should use 10.04 or install gnome-fallback. gnome-fallback is super crappy and doesn't have all the functionality of unity or that of 10.04.

Can you help with this problem?
