this link shows you how to add workspaces in 11.10 http://www.techdrivein.com/2011/10/15-things-i-did-after-installing-new.html

"Launch CCSM yet again, and select General Options from the category 'General'. Select the tab 'Desktop Size' and choose the values you want. Simple as that."

note that you would need to install ccsm by running the following command in terminal
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

to open terminal press CTRL + ALT + T
then copy and paste this command in
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

then after you install, search for compiz in dash to launch the application. Select General, Desktop size, etc etc.

also, make sure you change horizontal virtual size to something like 3 and vertical virtual size to 2, and number of desktops to whatever.

Thanks for this, Nathan. Worked fine. Just wish Ubuntu gave clear how-to
instructions on the HELP site!

(I'm interstate now and using my gmail a/c)
