How do I initiate a task bar on bottom of screen so I can see what windows I have open.

I am trying to open a taskbar at the bottom of the screen, such as I have in WINDOWS XP, so I can see what windows and operations I have open. I am running Ubuntu 11.10.

That is to say, in Windows XP when I reduce a window, it shows up in the lower task bar so I know what I have open.

I used to have this in the Ubuntu Vers. 10 but when I upgraded to vers. 11, it does not have a lower task bar, just the side bar launcher??

I like the lower task bar, how do I get it back in Vers. 11.???

You can install the xfce4 package, log off, log into the xfce session and you will have taskbars as you expect

Please try this... open a terminal and verify is already installed gnome-shell (gnome 3), type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get --reinstall install gnome-shell

Then close your working session and then login back

On the login window switch to ubuntu-shell Gnome3 (click on the gear wheel and select GNOME) then go to this page

https://extensions.gnome.org/

and install form that page the Frippery extensions

To go back to Ubuntu Unity if you don't like Gnome3, please logout and select the Ubuntu item to have Unity back

well, you don't need to install gnome or whatever.

just move the cursor to the left side and open up launcher. active programs are marked with a triangle beside it. if you have mutliple windows from the same program open, you can move the cursor over the programs icon to see what is open. for example, you have multiple firefox windows open, it will show you that. if you have a program open that isn't normally on the launcher, you will find it by scrolling to the bottom of the launcher.
