unity learning curve...

Asked by bas

When I type "gnome-terminal" in the unity lanch app search thing nothing appears.
When I type "banshee" in the unity lanch app search thing nothing appears.
Do I really have to fire up nautilus and browse to /usr/bin/gnome-terminal to start this stuff
Where is the application menu.
Only "unity 2d" is working in 3d i got no panels
gnome classic works but normal gnome i dont have panels with application menu

My gnome is destroyed after unity was forced in a upgrade.
Is there anyway I can get a usable desktop back?
I really used to love ubuntu but know im not sure what I have to do to fix this.
It just seems I ended up with a unusable situation and I just had it...

Any suggestions?

I use oneric...

For now you can use your old desktop experience . You can install cairo-dock. Go to software center and search cairo dock.
Else below link provides command line syntax
http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-install-cairo-dock-in-ubuntu-9-10-karmic.html

There is another way. You can install package "gnome-session-fallback" ,it will give you the old classic desktop in Ubuntu 11.10

For details follow below link

Is it the same in the F2 dialogue as if you press Windows key (called SuperL in Linux). If you run commands from terminal you don't need the full path, just like you don't run:

/usr/bin/sudo /usr/bin/apt-get update

The commands are in $PATH so no need to use absolute paths. Same for gnome-terminal. If you use terminal a lot, I suggest you install guake and a terminal can show or hide on hotkey.

Your search was too specific, try just "ter" and see what comes up -- I think what you want is just call terminal now.
Unity-2d will run on machines that don't have the gpu power for 3D, but you might be able to activate any proprietary video drivers (the "additional drivers" ) and then get 3D. It would have been nice to have an obvious choice for keeping the old interface.
