Problem in upgrading from 10.10 to 11.04

Asked by Asoka Dissanayake

Upgraded to latest Ubuntu 11.10 from 11.04 for a trial but wanted to revert to 11.04 which is more familiar and because 11.10 doesn't appear to have an option to change to the normal (classic) screen replacing Unity.

To do this, first installed 10.10 from the CD which was created when I first installed Ubuntu.

Now, when trying to upgrade to release 11.04 from version 10.10, an error message, reproduced below, appears:

"Invalid package information -
After your package information was updated the essential package 'ubuntu-minimal' can not be found anymore.

This indicates a serious error, please report this bug against the 'update manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report."

NOTE: I have not yet reported this as a bug yet because in Synaptic, 'ubuntu-minimal' is shown as installed.

I am not sure whether this is a bug.

Probably after one week from installation date 03.11.2011), some update may appear and until such time I am trying to find a workaround.

Has anyone experienced this issue?

Please discuss.

I reported the problem as a bug and surely it is a bug because many others had reported it.

The error message reported did not show up after some time. However, upgrading process was stalled many a times (reason for which I believe my slow Internet connection). Finally now it has been solved and have upgraded to 11.04 from 10.10.

Can you help with this problem?
