Updates made my laptop inoperable

Asked by David Turinetti

Upon the first batch of 142 updates in 11.10, once restarted the desktop only displayed the top bar, and even then without the wireless icons, logout buttons, battery info etc. I am using a Toshiba Satellite C655D-S5200 and it's only about 2 weeks old. Obviously this should not happen. I have since re-installed 11.10 and have not tried to install any updates yet, but I figure some of those updates are fairly important. Please help.

If you press ALT+F2 and run:

unity --replace

Does it load ok?

Thanks, I also found it had something to do with CompizConfig manager.
