Where is "system > preferences > etc"?

Asked by Tautai

I can't use any advice I find, because it all directs me to change system preferences, which I am unable to find, and unable to find any discussion of it.

What are you trying to do?
You can open the System Settings (where set the preference) here:

You are probably running the Unity interface, which doesn't have cascading menus, so instructions like that are not that useful for you.

For preferences or system administration, you should first look in System Settings... as eNry suggests. If that fails, or you're looking for an application that is not a configuration utility, you can just search for it (click the dash home or press the Super, a.k.a. Windows, key, and type in part of the name of the application in the search box).

Thanks very much. I still don't see any "preferences" in the System Settings menu (that's why I wasn't sure if it was the right menu. But the Super/Windows key route seems to work. (I am trying to toggle between language settings, and I found advice here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/+question/143233.)
