Can't run installed software

When I install software from the repository most times it doesn't show up in the dash menu. How do I run apps?

How have you installed the sofwater? Please exaplin what you fo step by step.

Went to Ubuntu Software Center, clicked on games, select game, clicked install. When I go to run it, only 4 games are shown, most of which I didn't install.

I figured it out. Click on the little check mark and more selections show up.
