No app icons on left with 11.10 upgrade

Asked by Frank Johnson

Popup window showed up last night that the 11.10 upgrade available (I was on 11.04). So I said sure. Updated with no critical errors (I watched the terminal window - it sped along without any critical stops / restarts).

When signed on for the first time after the reboot, a.) no application icons on the left; b.) no top ribbon where I can see my name, time, etc., - just a top menu the says file, edit, etc. with no way to cancel out of anything. I have to use ctrl-alt-delete to get a logoff prompt for the user. Should I just download a complete set of new "code" and just do a reinstall over my current 11.10? Thanks.

Try to do this:
1. Login into Ubuntu
2. Open a terminal by hitting CTRL + ALT + T
3. Insert and run this command:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/compiz-1
unity --reset

4. Restart, this should work.

If this not work, try to select Unity 2D as default session, than repeat the commands and try to login in Ubuntu default session.
