Unity: add icon to launcher

How does one add an icon to the launcher? I remove Thunderbird accidentally and would like to put it back.

Press on the top left dark icon "The dash Home" type: thunderbird and launch it
then look for Thunderbird icon to the left and right click on Thunderbird icon and "select keep in launcher"
