The Ubuntu Classic is replaced by Unity2D. You can install xfce4 and use XFCE as your desktop. Your Gnome apps will still run in XFCE

Or you can install Gnome Classic and have the old Gnome2 back again. Install gnome-panel with the Software Center, or do it with command line:

sudo apt-get install gnome-panel

Next you just have to log out, and at the login screen click on the gear icon and select Ubuntu Classic. Next log in and enjoy your classic desktop. Just a note: if you flub the password when logging back in, you have to select Ubuntu Classic again, as it resets it.

Thanks, Chris. I found Unity to be confusing and difficult to learn. In particular difficult to configure to my own needs. Nice to have comfortable, efficient Gnome back again.

More suitable for you would be to install
Gnome's 2 fork named MATE.
https://github.com/Perberos/Mate-Desktop-Environment/wiki

This will give you a full Gnome 2 environment.
In fact it is Gnome 2 maintained by Perberos.

Good luck with that.
