launcher freezing in 11.10 32-bit

Asked by marcus aurelius

installed 11.10 over 10.04.3 by choosing replace 10.04.3

it seems that everytime i right click on an icon to remove it from the launcher, the system freezes for a few minutes after the options appear. i would have to right click again to remove the app.

Hi Marcus, I'm seeing something similar on two clean installs of 11.10 32 bit, One on an EeePC 901 and one on a Celeron 2.8GHz

Sometimes when I right click on the Launcher icon I get the menu but can't select anything, it all stays gray. Clicking elsewhere on the Launcher gets rid of the menu and I can try again, which normally works.

Does this sound anything like your problem, or are you seeing something different? I wanted to put a bug report in for this, but I'm having trouble recreating it reliably, or having any idea exactly what is tripping the fault condition so I'm still in fact finding mode until I can get a clearer idea of what is causing it.

sounds like we have different problems.

i did notice that sometimes i have to click something 2 or 3 times before it registers. e.g. the shut down button for the browser.

Did you delete Lucid first, then install to the clean space?
Does it work ok as a new user?

Andrew, your "new user" idea gives an avenue for investigation. On both my systems / was formatted and a clean install was done, however the /home partition is from 11.04 and before that, 10.04, and the user ID is the same, so I guess there may be some configuration parameters there that have been left over and are causing some problems.

Marcus, the reason I though out problems might be the same is because when I see the problem, the launcher is essentially locked up. The grayed out menu will not go away, and the launcher will not autohide. It's only by accident that I found out that clicking on another icon will start it up again.

It's very possible. If it does not happen as a new user then your current user config is causing the issue, however if it the same activity is present in the new user then it is the application itself making problems. With new releases and pre-releases, it is good to test with a new user if there are issues. You can even just keep it around and delete the hidden files in its home folder (except .profile and .bashrc) and you will keep it as a default profile each and every time you log in as it to test something whic is going awry
