Can the look of Nautilus and Unity be customized?

Asked by Mannex

I know the initial screen at ubuntu.com introducing 11.10 says, "Hey, good looking" but to be honest, there are some rather hideous layouts in the new 11.10. Nautilus used to allow wallpapers in the browsers. Is there any way to do that now? And where can we get more themes for Unity? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

OK, here are the solutions I came up with:

1. If you're looking for more theme options, you can either install Gnome Shell, and then Gnome-Tweak, or you can do what I eventually did and dump Unity for KDE Plasma.

2. Nautilus is just ugly now, but there are alternatives such as Dolphin (which also works under KDE).
