unity 11.10 lost access to home folder with update

Asked by steve taylor

Just finished updating to 11.10, OK maybe a few glitches but now I have lost access to my files and folders.
They are there on the desktop when first I boot up but if I click on one, say my home folder it tries to open but can't.
At the same time all my desktop folders disappear, just poof! gone.
I have tried Classic but it's pretty much the same story i.e. if I try to open any folders they vanish.
Any ideas. There is no access to My Computer in the side bar.
Also I notice Gloobus is unable to update. A bit worrying. Help please.

(steps so far;
I have updated grub at boot recovery also updated also repair broken, no change.
Not that it's relevant but also the old 'frequency out of range' issue which I fixed.
Though I notice that Jockey is reporting that it's actually using the graphic driver.
flashplugin-downloader wasn't happy during the update but it seems present in synaptic.
now I'm stuck.)

If you run:

sudo chown $USER:$USER $HOME

Should give your files the ownership of your user. Can help.

Thanks for that one actionparsnip though 'sudo chown $USER:$USER $HOME' has no effect on this issue.
Just tried 2D and it's all OK there, no problems. Hmmm
I have a feeling that there are bit's missing in this 11.10 update. Maybe I should have burnt a disc.

Hold everything, it's all just re-appeared!

Just typed 'home' in the dash, it thought about it and opened and at the same time my files arrived on the desktop.
OK so maybe sudo chown $USER:$USER $HOME has a delay on it.

Funny old world, if fixed, I hope it stays fixed.
Pending then.

So I tried to open Gloobus which opened and my files vanished again.
Whatever is causing this must be tied up with a partial Gloobus download.
I have un- installed using synaptic and re-opened Home in the dash.
That worked and my desktop files returned and open fine.

hope this helps somebody

Oh dear! same problem has returned this morning despite having removed a partial Gloobus download.
This is not going to be good if I can't get at my folders.
Any ideas please.

Fixed now, fingers crossed.
From another thread.

sudo apt-get remove nautilus-open-terminal
sudo nautilus -q

Q : why would you include a piece of script that makes folders disappear
or even why wouldn't you have removed it with an update since the glitch was identified.

it's a mystery
