Unity is the Gnome Shell in ubuntu 11.04 so in previous version of ubuntu what was the Gnome Shell?

the Gnome version is 2.28 in previous version of ubuntu 10.10.

U shouln't ask such silly questions in launchpad.A google search would help

Metacity ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metacity ) was the default window manager for GNOME 2. Compiz could also be used. Unity (at least the default 3D version) is actually a plugin for Compiz.

GNOME Shell uses a descendent of Metacity called Mutter.

If you want to use gnome classic in Ubuntu 11.04 simply choose it at login see at bottom of your user login page...
