Ubuntu 11.04 isn't compatible with my hardware and screen flickers or doesn't work already tried to login with "Ubuntu classic"

Asked by Lynn Vanzo

I had 10.10 on my computer, and decided to install the upgrade to 11.04.

When it first installed, it said that it wasn't compatible with the hardware on my computer and that I should select the classic version on sign in.

When I could see the screen long enough to be able to sign in, I did select the ubuntu classic version.

This didn't help at all.

The screen flickers and after my desktop loads, an ubuntu screen goes over it.

when I run my mouse cursor over it the icons will appear in boxes.

occasionally the firefox icon appears and I can start the browser window...but it flashes and is hard to get to see it.

it is also "hidden" behind other screens so seems invisible.

This is very frustrating and I don't know how to fix it.

Can I downgrade back to 10.10? or are there fixes that I can try.

I do get windows of opportunity (like right now) to be able to see what I'm doing.

But for seemingly no reason, the screens will flicker and go away again.

This looks like it may work. I had to log off, switch to "ubuntu classic (no effects)", and then log back in. I hope I don't have to do this everytime I use my computer. (There was no option for "gnome classic no effects".) I'll try this for a while and see if it works. I'll get back to you in a couple of days. Thanks!

Thanks, I wanted to wait a day and make sure it really worked. Sometimes we could use it with no problems...but this seems to have worked! Thanks!

This is a great system...my web-developer son is very impressed that I was able to solve this problem on my own! ...with your help of course! Thanks again!
