Is there anyway I can disable the unity sidebar launcher? I would prefer not to use Ubuntu Classic.

Any hope of an easy disable in the future releases?

It is default in all foreseeable releases, Unity 2D replaces Ubuntu Classic from Oneiric onwards. If you boot to Ubuntu Classic and run:

compiz --replace

You can then disable the Unity plugin and get 3D effects but with the classic desktop.
