using oneric unstable: unable to start to Ubuntu after system update and restart.

Asked by changster

I used the terminal to upgrade from 11.04 to 11.10 beta. And after it upgraded it prompted a restart.

However, after restarting, the computer is stuck at a dialog that names different statuses and [OK] to the right side of the screen. The slashing _ sign continues but the computer shows no activity at all. How do I get through this?

Is this an issue that can't be solved? I've tried everything on the keyboard and it only budges when I press the power button and it shuts down without entering the OS.

Am I asking the question wrong? Because now I have a netbook that doesn't even allow me to boot my USB installation drive, or any drive for that matter. I have a netbook that is currently in a coma. I don't know what to do.

In the effort to try to get the operating system to boot properly, I selected the recovery mode on GRUB. It successfully got through the dialog, but right afterwards it asked for the computer's login and password. I assumed this was my username I selected for the computer, and the password. I entered the information, but the computer denied my access. Is there a default name or password that I don't know of?

Hey Changster,

I had a similar issue during testing 11.10 (from an upgrade) and I ended up doing a fresh install of 11.10 Beta 1. I had thought the issue was due to something I messed up with xorg or my graphics drivers but I was unable to remedy it (I had been playing around with various desktop environments and broke something).

Regarding the login issue, If you've installed Ubuntu and are having credential issues check caps lock and such, otherwise you may need to reinstall or perform some sort of password recovery (if possible).

If you're just in a live environment the username should be Ubuntu and the password <blank>.

At this point, were I you, I'd likely do a fresh install of 11.10 (if I was brave) or 11.04 (if I was tired of mucking around).

Anyway, best of luck!

Thanks! I realize that I had better not mess with beta versions of anything given their buggy nature and my lack of time and lack of expertise in this.
