11.04 showing only screen and cursor, no taskbar

Asked by Heather McFadden

I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 from a burned CD onto my Toshiba Satellite A-104. The install seemed to go fine, and it starts up and asks for my login normally. However, once I'm logged in, nothing happens. There is a purple background with a cursor/arrow in the middle, and I can move the arrow around, but there's nothing to click on. No taskbar, menu or icon of any kind.

I did a forced shutdown (since there is no restart button) and turned it on again, but the same thing happened. I have no idea what might be causing this or how to fix it. Any help would be very much appreciated.

I do not have 11.04, but I think someone said to move cursor to sides or top or bottom.

Log off or reboot andlog in to Ubuntu classic. You can then get updates and drivers. Unity NEEDS 3d acceleration which willhopefully be available after updates and installing drivers (if they are available0. Depends on the video chip the system uses.

I once again shut down and restarted, and the problem seems to have resolved itself. Thanks for the answers!
