I should have said workspace switcher. It divides into four panes but applications only go over one of the panes. I cannot multitask on my laptop like I used to. It seems like I've locked it somehow or don't know what keys to use or mouse clicks to switch panes. I am using ubuntu for linux with unity toolbar, firefox or chrome and thunderbird mail. I would like to have my mail open in one pane and the browser open in another and maybe a spreadsheet or whatever in the other panes?

If it is a workspace switcher only show 1 or 2 virtual desktop despite 4 for the default try this.
1. Alt-F2
2. type gconf-editor
3. apps - compiz-1 - general - screen0 - options
4. on the right pance there are two options. hsize and vsize. double click hsize and change to 2, same as vsize.

Actually on new installation are 4 workspaces.
Try shortcut super+s in order to view them all.
## super is the 'ms-windows' key.

To move from one to the other: ctrl+alt+arrow key (all)

http://askubuntu.com/questions/28086/unity-keyboard-mouse-shortcuts

To adjust settings install
compizconfig-settings-manager

which isn't installed by default. But be carefully when adjusting plugins and avoid conflicts between plugins.

In case something goes wrong you need to open a terminal (ctrl+alt+t) and reset Unity by typing:
unity --reset
or
unity --replace
