Problems disabling Unity - Blank Screen

Asked by John Deakin

I disabled Unity using compiz and after that the screen became blank apart from the background, a couple of desktop icons and her e-mailer which is invoked automatically. Question 159875 seems to be a similar problem but I did not understand the answer given. I could not see how to: "Go to user, share, applications", after creating a new folder on the desktop.

In any case I do not wish to enable Unity again as I am finding it very flaky at the moment. Is there any way of escaping the blank screen and returning to the standard desktop?

Thank,
John

I can't, the log in screen does not have these options. Very occasionally they show but more normally all I get is the access options, the time and the close down button. As I say on occasion the various options show themselves but it is intermittent and I can't guarantee when they will show.

What I omitted to say in the original post was that I had removed Unity from my wife's account, so I am in deep poo. When I did this for myself a few weeks ago I had a bit of trouble initially but it sorted itself out.

John

The option to change the session type (from "Ubuntu" to "Ubuntu Classic" or "Ubuntu Classic (no effects)") appears after you specify your username, while you are being prompted for your password.

Thank you very much. I had set my wife's password so that it was not needed at log on, so never saw that screen. All sorted now.

John
