Are you logged in to Ubuntu Unity or Ubuntu classic (Gnome) session?
Example for login screen.

## Unity
Switch to tty (virtual console, text mode only): ctrl+alt+f1
Login with username and passwd.
(Note, while typing the passwd there is no feedback such as stars or alike, just press [Enter] key after inserting passwd.)
Type:
unity --reset

Switch back to desktop: ctrl+alt+f7
or
sudo reboot

## Ubuntu classic (Gnome)
Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Type:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel

this works GREAT!
I had been tweaking the launcher icon size and installing effects losing most of the desktop

Can you help with this problem?
