ubuntu 11.04 no menu or panels

I have just upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 but the menu and panels are not being displayed.

Are you logged in to Ubuntu Unity or Ubuntu classic (Gnome) session?
Example for login screen.

## Unity
Switch to tty (virtual console, text mode only): ctrl+alt+f1
Login with username and passwd.
(Note, while typing the passwd there is no feedback such as stars or alike, just press [Enter] key after inserting passwd.)
Type:
unity --reset

Switch back to desktop: ctrl+alt+f7
or
sudo reboot

## Ubuntu classic (Gnome)
Open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
Type:
gconftool-2 --recursive-unset /apps/panel
pkill gnome-panel

this works GREAT!
 I had been tweaking the launcher icon size and installing effects losing most of the desktop
