desktop icons do not show saved files when downloading from the internet

Asked by Russell Booth

Today for some reason, I made 2 desktop icon folders but when I downloaded some files from the internet ,it didn't show up in the folder on the desktop but when I go and directly search for the files under "places" on the toolbar menu, it is saved there.

I've noticed that the folder icons are missing the arrows from them which indicate they are linked up to the file system , I also noticed I had trouble creating the desktop folders , having to open them up and then copy & paste them onto the desktop , so it's as if there is a link which has gone missing.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this?

When you download a file, choose the download location to be the folders on the desktop. By default it will save into a folder in your home directory, which you do not want. To change this, assuming you are using firefox, select Edit->Preferences->General->Save Files To... then choose the folder on your desktop.

This indicates that they are real folders, and not "shortcuts" to other folders elsewhere on your system.

It sounds like you have created a copy of whatever folders it was onto your desktop -- there is no linkage between these two copies. Delete one, and the other remains. Modify one, and the other is unmodified.

It saves the download into the file that I click onto, but I am unable to create shortcuts on the desktop since the weekend , for some reason , someone on the net said that a script to link the shortcut with the file may be missing.

The folders that are on there from before are o.k. , I just cannot create a folder on the desktop which associates with the file name I give it.

Is there any way of fixing this ?

I forgot to mention I used to be able to right click on the file under "places" and create the link from there , I can no longer do that.

If this helps, I've been informed that I can press the CTRL & SHIFT buttons simultaneously while dragging the file from the places list with the mouse while holding the left mouse button down and it works that way , I just want to fix the bug which is preventing me from doing it with the right mouse button and the mouse.

Maybe I should be kicking myself or whether somethings changed I don't know , but I've got to hold down onto the LEFT mouse button while dragging the file down to the desktop , which then creates the desktop link to that file.
