computer is black screening because of unity+dual monitors

Asked by taith

I installed ubuntu 11.04 fresh, and everything functioned perfectly, i had it set to auto-login, and enabled my nvidia graphics card, and turned on dual screen, i restarted the computer, and it loaded a black screen. the only functioning thing was the cursor, it was capable of crossing both screens like it should, the keyboard and dekstop are completely un-responsive, and the desktop, black and without panels.

Can you press CTRL+ALT+T and run a terminal?

Sigh, autologin is such a pain :(

You can drop to root recovery mode and mess with the GDM config so you DON'T autologin.

Boot to root recovery mode and run:

nano /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

about 20 lines down or so, "AutomaticLoginEnable" and "AutomaticLogin"

You can manipulate those, when you are done editting press CTRL+X, press Y then press ENTER. The new file is saved and you can reboot with:

reboot

Then you will get the usual login screen. This makes your OS more secure too. You can now switch the desktop to log on to
