natty 11.04 loads and refreshes etc. slow

Asked by drmjh

since uprgrading to 11.04 natty, my gmail account has become impossibly slow. Depressing a single keyboard key can take as long as 30 seconds before it appears on the monitor.
Or, reading a news article, page down is also very, very slow.

Could you type Ctrl+Alt+T to get a terminal, and after the command "top". Then check if a process take continuously much of CPU time.

Entering top in a terminal:

Firefox-bin 6.17%
gtk-nash 4.2%
xorg 12.01

Of course non of these values remains, but continually changes. Sometimes gtk-nash is 7.2%

It's not a CPU issue. Perhaps a network one.
Have you issues with software which don't use network ?
If you download files, the throughput is correct ?
Do you use a wired of WIFI network ?

The unit I use is a Desktop and is a slightly older unit than my wife's laptop, and both are in use throughout the day. The latter connects via wifi and runs Ub. 10.04 and runs as usual. That is, no issues.
Immediately after starting 11.04, my gmail became painfully to use and I changed the viewing mode back to basic html, just to get any work done.

Sorry, but I was away.
I have since changed to a simple universal debian OS with no improvement.

Are you using "Unity" or "Classical without effect" (command gdmsetup) ?

Unity was impossibly slow and hung up.
I am using Debian Universal Desktop.

I have currently no idea of what is issue. Upgrading via update-manager from one version to another one is known to fail often. What you could do is downloading Natty and booting on a CD (or a USB stick) and select "Upgrading" which will reinstall system files without touching user files.

Thank you for your effort and honesty.
I took the precaution of backing up my data to an USB stick prior to upgrading from 10.04 to Natty.
I will use my laptop and wait for the next upgrade. I get a Ubuntu magazine so I should getting a new disk one of these weeks.
Thanks everybody!
