Unity wont work on Ubuntu 11.04

Asked by Buddy Anderson

I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 and also done a fresh install. I get a message that I cannot run Unity. I installed the nvidia current driver as well as the nvidia 173 driver. I get a message that says the driver is activated but not in use. I have tried to run 3d games and what not to use the driver as per the instructions. What do I need to do to get this driver to work or use an ubuntu driver that will make Unity work? I have an Nvidia Ge Force Go 7400 graphics card. Thanks for your help.

You can force Unity to use the driver by adding

UNITY_FORCE_START=1

to /etc/environment (restart may be required and system may be buggy/unstable).

I did what you said and rebooted and now my laptop display is blank and when
I run diagnostics it tells me
that i have an incompatible video driver. The only way I can see anything
is by plugging a monitor into my vga
port on my laptop. And there is lines all over the screen. Can you tell me
how to fix it back to where my display
on my laptop works?
Thanks

If you log in then press ALT+F2 and run:

compiz --replace

Does it start ok? If so you can run:

ccsm

then enable the Unity plugin. Does this help?

Can you help with this problem?
