Lost desktop after upgrade from 10.10 Netbook to 11.04

Asked by Baloo

Having recently upgraded to 11.04 (netbook) from 10.10 on my netbook I now dont get any menus/buttons when I log in.
I can work around this by switching to a console, loging in and running 'unity' which after a bit starts up on my graphical login.
How do I fix this so I get menu bar and buttons on login?
running gdmsetup gives me the login options screen but I can not unlock it to make changes (clicking the button produces no dialog).

If you log in as another user, does it do the same?

Yes it does have the same problem on an existing user, but I do get the options at the bottom of the login screen to choose session when clicking on other users.
Still to experiment with those and create a new user.

Ah. Was unable to create a new user, but after a restart I now get the option to choose Ubuntu session rather than netbook on my own login. Using that gives me the menus etc. and I can create users and unlock the login screen dialogue to change the default session so fingers crossed this is fixed!
Thanks
