Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity: clear recent documents and windows navigation bar

Asked by akuma-kun

I tried the new Ubuntu 11.04 with the Unity GUI, and generally speaking it looks great.

After half an hour of exploring the new GUI and opening/closing documents, I found out that few basic and nonetheless useful and important features are missing from Unity:

1 - there is not any "clear recent documents" available anywhere.
Documents cache keeps piling up with entries that cannot be cleared.

2 - when there are several windows opened, there is not any bar showing what windows are opened, as it has always been in the style of Gnome/KDE/Windows/Mac way.
One cannot really navigate through all the windows by minimizing them or with ALT+TAB.

Therefore rolling back to Ubuntu 10.10.

From my experience, and putting myself in the shoes of a non PC tech person, these 2 features are really important to be there.

I feel that Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity GUI will not really catch up as previous releases, unless there will be an update to Unity addressing these 2 features in the very near future.

Why not just boot to Gnome classic and it will look exactly as it does in maverick....

I read somewhere that Unity doesn't use the old "X Window System" system, but a new lighter window rendering.
I presume that Ubuntu team sees Unity as part of improving the Linux experience over other GUIs.
That is why I suggest to implement Unity with the 2 features I listed above.
I just rolled back to Ubuntu 10.10 to have a clean installation with no tweaks.

"I read somewhere that Unity doesn't use the old "X Window System" system, but a new lighter window rendering." No. It still use X11 server. Mutter, which is a layer between X11 and Window Manager was replaced by something later (and it is a very good thing!). Currently, a new graphic server (Wayland) is under development, you will have to be very patient.
I think Unity is great for netbook, but for larger screens, I prefer old GUI Gnome/Metacity.
