Lost all icons and bars on desktop on UPGRADE of 10.10 to 11.04. Can I re-install 11.04 or 10.10 to get my "picture-frame" working again?

I have lost all icons and bars on the desktop while doing an upgrade of Ubuntu 10.10 to 11.04. The upgrade had completed and I was just beginning to explore the new Unity desktop when all icons and bars disappeared. My computer is now displays my wallpaper alone (no controls are accessible). Can I re-install 10.10 or 11.04? What are my options?
