blank white screen after removing unity

Asked by Ben Mo Botnick

I wanted to try out unity on 10.10, but after a while I decided I didn't like it. I removed it using the ubuntu software center (the same way I installed it), but when I logged out, and logged back in, all I get now is a blank white screen. The same thing happens when I restart the computer. I suspect I deleted the user interface for the desktop (being myself), but I'm not entirely sure, and If I am right, I'm not sure how to fix it.

Please close all running GUIs (SoftwareCenter, Synaptic, Update-Manager)
Please open a terminal: ctrl+alt+t
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
sudo apt-get -f install
sudo dpkg-reconfigure ubuntu-desktop

## Maybe the last cmd isn't needed anymore.

sudo reboot

Choose from Login Window, Ubuntu-classic-desktop.

Note, when installing or removing applications user gets informed which packages else are going to be removed also, so called dependencies. In case some of them might need to be reinstalled because another app depends on them.

To see what else was removed in order to restore it, go to
applications -> software center -> history
or
system administration -> synaptic -> files -> history

Both offer to view history of installed and removed software.
