slow start up, slow behaviour, slow update

Asked by Andres Muniz

Hi, recently updated from 10.04 to 10.10 on my acer aspire one 110. SSD: two years ago It had linpus, ever since ubuntu netbook.

The update took about 13hrs instalation was more than 12hrs. The download was not that bad (it was about 1.5Gb). The initial caluculation was of about 17hrs so I managed to trim off 5 hrs there.

Everytime I turn on the laptop it is very slow, there is some messages but they are very quick, I don't know how to recover them. I think something it is unable to load. Then a good amount of time is spent in a black screen. I haven't taken note of how much time but it is slower than 10.04. Slower than my wife’s W7 with antivirus and all (which is a bit embarrassing).

General use seems fine except for other problems I have found that I have reported.

The launch bar seems to have a life of it's own: it folds and unfolds at a pace I find difficult to catch up. I was expecting not to loose some of the icons over the top or down the bottom...

pressing the home button sometimes shows the quick launch number buttons. But other times doesn't show anything.

Are these things my fault? I don't think I tweaked the settings in any special way.

But just to let ubuntu developers know: even with all these problems. I like what has been done and the potential of what it can be. Thank you.

Wow, 12 hours to install... On a Dell mini 9 with a small 8GB SSD, the update is more like 2 hours. Maximum. So something is clearly wrong.

I didn't find any hardware problem with this model on internet. Maybe you could check the logs and try to see what's wrong. But that can take quite some time.

Just check this one maybe: open a terminal, press "dmesg" and see if you can find anything interesting there (I know, it's not always easy to understand, but maybe you will notice something).

Other idea: try a USB stick with a live system. If it's working much faster, you know you don't have any hardware problem but a software one. Then you can consider backuping the files and doing a clean install.

Could be using a dialup connection, so a download of that size WILL take a while.

Can you run:

dmesg > ~/dmesg123.txt; gedit ~/dmesg123.txt; rm ~/dmesg123.txt

What is output?

@actionparsnip what took 12hrs was not the download but the instalation part. Download was done in less than 1hr.

@ François Tissandier I'll try that tonight. I would rather not do a clean instal. Just our of pride (told my windows friends that that was never necesary under linux, should shut my big mouth next time). Will try your USB live system: good idea.

I'll post the dmesg output later today.

Yikes thats pretty crazy. I'd also test your RAM is healthy using memtest in the grub menu at bootup.

Andres, I see what you mean but you should make a difference between:

-the system is stable, it's as fast 2 years after install as on the first day. This is more or less true (updates will always make things change), but compared to Windows XP for instance, the difference is striking, unless you spend a lot of time cleaning your XP.

-version upgrades are not trivial updates. We talk about major changes every 6 months. It's almost comparable to upgrade your XP to Vista then to Seven. Even if it's working better and better, I still think a clean install every 2 or 3 versions is welcome.

But in any case, a system upgrade shouldn't make the system that slow, it's really weird. And I'm quite confident that it can be fixed. To break the system, you need to damage your harddrive or hit very hard on the kernel. It's just that sometimes the time you spend on understanding the problem is not worth it, it's simpler to reinstall. You are just unlucky to be in this situation I think :) 99% of problems can be easily fixed with the right people to help.

Great, thanks for input.

Startup takes 2 minutes 30 seconds. With the USB it takes 1minute 40 seconds.

I did the dmesg as suggested. I'll try to find out how to put the whole thing in a txt file and post it here but in the mean time I found this

Is the interesting section where the time skips a lot. Notice how the sda1 partition gets mounted read only?I suggest you boot to liveCD or plug the device into another Linux system and fsck the partition. The fact you are using ext4 on a USB device does NOT help things as flash storage has a limited number of write cycles and Ext3 and Ext4 write to the journal a LOT, this massively reduces the life of the device and Ext2 is a far better choice. I personally suspect the device is failing due to wear and so the OS is mounting it read only.
The fsck will not wear out the disk more unless it needs to repair data as fsck only reads the data and flash devices have an unlimited amount of read cycles.

Hi,

I'll do what you suggest: I have a live USB witn 10.10 ready. I guess fsck is something I run on terminal? I'll have a look in the man pages to see how I can check the ssd.

That being said, I had read in linux format magazine (or understood from it) that USB device is not the same as SSD and SSD are not subject to wear because of something caled cycling recording or something: it doesn't save always in the same spot. I could have gotten this completely wrong...

To make sure we are on the same page: I'm using acer aspire one 110 that has a SSD. I only used the live usb to compare start up speeds.

OK, I'll give the fsck a go. Is this the same as memtest? doesn't sound like it. Wish me luck! After that's done I'll try to find out how to do the memtest.

See disadvantages section

It's the same technology, just more capacity.

Yes fsck is a command line thing. You can run:

sudo fdisk -l

to see the avalable partitions. Make sure it is not mounted using:

mount

You can then run:

sudo fsck -a /dev/partitionname

replace partitionname with the actual partition name it has.

Ok read the wikipedia article. Wear leveling was what I meant.

I got a bit messed up with the comand line but I went to ubuntu's disk utility and did a file sistem check. I'm guessing it's the same thing, but using a gui for people like me...

It came out with my ATA pSSD 1800 "file system is clean" message.

I then went to the benchmark thing, and did a read test and access time: read average is 39.3 mb/s and access time is 0.8ms.

Did I miss anything?

I have a Swap of 724MB, is that too small?

Any more clues? Thanks for your time!

If the system boots slowly AND you are seeing the system hang occasionally while you are using it, you may be seeing Bug #574462, which seems to be due to a firmware issue in some SSDs. (When I say "hang" I mean you will be browsing the web or opening a file and everything seems to come to a stop for 5-20 seconds.) There is a workaround listed in that bug but it's not exactly user-friendly.

Hi. I can onLy guess this solves my problem. I moved some time ago to another incearingly distro that seems to use clutter for animations. Less of a computer but more of a mobile. Restraining yo use names. Thank you for your help!
